Why the Blogger Beef?

Being a blogger is now a job possibility and one that you can earn money to pay your rent, it is an industry but for some reason if you are earning a living from your blog, or take on a sponsored post or two you are being chastised and spoke about like you have jeopardised your integrity.

My blog and others when I first started over ten years ago did certainly have a more personal feel than they do today, they were less polished, blog headers were created and shared for free, photos varied from dark grainy snaps to stock images and perhaps more of what would be something like a weekend update to our friends via email, but lets say we were the early adopters of the 'lifestyle blog' but now there is a more professional approach to blogging and money has become involved and that appears to be a problem.

The content of my blog back in the early days and those I read was of a vintage, home making nature with a heavy focus on crafts. We shared books we loved, recipes and in many cases there were bloggers creating items which would be sold via blog shops or as early adopters of Etsy. I was no less inspired back then to make purchases from other bloggers than I am today, the only difference now is that instead of Martha Stewarts' latest book it's a lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury and chances are the link I clicked was an affiliate link (as these two are) or maybe the blogger was paid to promote the brand.

Today's rambles are inspired by the above Tweet from Adrienne at The Sunday Girl. I've seen a lot of conversation recently with bloggers saying they are always happy to support fellow bloggers and their sponsored content, liking the Instagram post with #AD or clicking their affiliate links to make purchases. Whilst on the one hand I do not personally believe in blindly 'liking' posts because they are #ADs, I don't actively ignore or avoid them because they are and support their right to and ability to earn a living by why are others not?

We are all subject to and 'guilty' of advertising, whether it's the supermarket carrier bag you use, car you drive or that swanky designer handbag you're swinging on your arm. As I sit and type and look around my lounge I can see 'advertising' from Fortnum & Mason, Disney, Apple, Kate Spade and much more. In this instance this advertising is for free but for some reason when bloggers, influencers or whatever you choose to call them are openly advertising we are calling them out for all manner of reasons.

Becky Bedbug recently tweeted an affiliate link to a rather fabulous leopard print bomber from Marks and Spencer which I subsequently purchased by clicking her affiliate link and thus crediting a little commission (and if my understanding is correct affiliate links earnings are small in many cases) into Becky's account and I have no problem with that. Becky effectively did some personal shopping for me. She hadn't purchased it herself (as far as I'm aware) and beyond expressing that she thought it was nice was still advertising Marks and Spencer and that 'advertisement' led to my making a purchase. M&S was paid, why shouldn't Becky have a little bit of that action because it's highly unlikely I wouldn't have made that purchase unless I'd seen that tweet.

The issue really seems to be a sense of distrust. Your favourite blogger has made the big leagues and has 'changed' and instead of the budget brands they once used it's now all high and luxury that you perhaps cannot afford, perhaps 'every' blog post is sponsored. If you no longer enjoy the blog or trust what they're saying why are still reading? Surely no matter whether the content is paid for or not their voice is not one you trust? Of course if a vegan blogger publishes a sponsored post talking about how great a certain meat product is then you have reason to doubt their ethics but is there really reason to be suspicious of a blogger because they are paid to talk about certain brands or products?

Just because a blogger chooses to purchase for themselves budget products can they not have a 'paid for' opinion about a higher end brand or vice versa? I have a post coming up shortly which features a gifted mascara that I love but having seen the price when I went to (affiliate) link it I was shocked and know that I don't expect I will repurchase. I will speak of that in the post but nonetheless I still love that higher end mascara as much as the budget one I am using and will be more likely to repurchase. I don't believe that makes my opinion or review any less valid or honest.

In blogging circles I'm a small fish but I am lucky enough that I have a  good relationship with brands and PRs and receive products 'for free' (if free is photographing, testing, writing about). Some I like, some I don't but I also give products a more thorough testing process when gifted, those purchased myself I can often dislike and cast aside immediately when us I'm sure many of us know it can often be after the second or tenth use/day/week when we find what works or really doesn't and I'm more likely to experiment with a product that has been sent to me. Similarly I know many fashion bloggers are criticised for featuring products they have subsequently sold on the likes of Depop or perhaps the item is never seen again. As I say I'm small fry and if you could see even my stash of beauty products I can only begin to wonder what comes through the big hitters doors and sometimes despite liking or loving a product I will pass on to friends and family so it doesn't gather dust or expire. The question, more so I imagine in fashion blogging circles is the ethics of selling clothing you have been gifted but if they have served their purposes isn't it your right to choose what to do with your belongings? How many people work in stores and have used their discounts to the benefit of friends, family or to financially benefit them?

The are certain products that I don't have to purchase for myself, usually skincare, because I receive enough to cover my needs. Readers could suggest I only use things I've been given by the brand but wouldn't it be more distrustful for me to buy products to appease an audience? And as I mentioned above, just because a product no longer appears on the blog nor makes an appearance in an empties post doesn't mean it wasn't one I loved just perhaps it went on to a better whilst I did move on to the next product.

I'm not perfect and nor is every blogger, I have my niggles too. I can't stand LIKEtoKNOW.it. It drives me nuts and doesn't really work 'for me'. Often I'll click a photo to see where something is from and there isn't any tagged information unless I like it and receive the subsequent email. By the time the email comes through I often hit delete because I've lost interest or suspect it's out of my budget range anyway but I completely understand why bloggers use it. I know it is frustrating when a blogger shows an item of clothing and say 'links below' or I've 'tweeted a link' and you're screaming just tell me its from ASOS because they want to affiliate link it and earn money from however many people will make a purchase based on their recommendation by why shouldn't they? I'm sure it's easier than replying to every tweet or comment asking the same thing (and how often do bloggers ask where something is from in instances when ALL THE INFO IS THERE!). These activities do not they are money hungry, not that I see any shame from wanting to earn a good living, and I'm not sure why bloggers must always be the individuals that are out of pocket and deemed to be taking advantage of their audience unless they truly are being deceptive if so I return to my earlier point. If you feel they are then remove them from social media.

Yes there are 'shady' bloggers in the same way there are shady lawyers or crooked accountants and I too get frustrated when little old me receives a product and another blogger suddenly talks of how they popped into Boots because they had to pick up 'Product X' and you are sure they're on the same press list as you are or you read 'sponsored post' on one blog and on the other they are not declaring as such but let's not judge every blogger just because some do earn a living from their jobs. You wouldn't do yours for free and I'm sure come appraisal time are requesting a pay review if you've been given additional duties.

If you don't trust a blogger then unfollow but don't simply mistrust them because they are speaking about a product they are paid to do. Remember next time you Instagram your Starbucks coffee that is the same thing. The only difference is you paid them to advertise not the other way around.

I'd love to know your thoughts on the topic.

Review | Busy B DAY A PAGE DIARY 2017

I love a diary but I'm incredible fickle about my choices and have been known to chop and change between types and methods throughout the year depending on where my life is at. Currently, whilst 'unemployed' I no longer have the Outlook diary in the office which I can view at a glance five days a week and no need to carry my Louis Vuitton Personal Organiser around because I now have the Ban.do weekly diary to hand during some point of the day.

I'm finding the Ban.do Diary currently suits my needs as I keep track of what is becoming a far busier lifestyle during my 'sabbatical' but I have managed to find a way that works for me perfectly - and I may well share with you in due course.

Something I am conscious of is returning to the corporate world and wanting to maintain my diary at home and my blog requirements. That is where the Busy B Day A Page Diary 2017* comes in. The Ban.do is perfect for keeping track of appointments, notes and reminders but what about my plans for the day when I need more space than a few lines to plot my day?

Currently whilst finding my 'working from home' routine I'm using a regular notebook simply to write down my tasks for the day whether blog or home related and only yesterday I was writing the dates for the forthcoming week to add future tasks that are coming up which isn't ideal and a day to a page diary would do just the job.

When I return to work and I'm reliant on scheduling posts and some might say being more in front of my blog planning the Busy B Day a Page Diary 2017 will be perfect for this and I wish I could start using it now - in fact as I write this post I remember my 2016 diary that has been untouched and will start using that for the remainder of the year.

I'm sure stationery lovers are already familiar with Busy B as they have some wonderful products to keep you organised whilst aesthetically pleasing. The Day a Page Diary I have compliments my marble Ban.do planner and is A5 in size so sits nicely atop it and create one of those areas of your desk that you could almost consider Pinterest worthy.

It's not a diary I would want to carry around in my bag on a daily basis as with most day a page diaries it is weighty but not overly so, compare it to one of your more heavier books you're reading. The cover is soft, similar to your Moleskine notebook which ensures there is no added weight but has a sturdiness I'm not concerned about becoming too damaged. It's cream colour I'm sure would suffer some battering over time but I'm not too worried about that for now.

Its internal design is very simple, a day a page and that's that. The pages are lined which is a thumbs up for me and my preference and there's enough space for me to cover my tasks for the day whether simply 'share post on social media' to reminding me of products to follow up on. I can easily make notes about products I'm currently testing and other such musings on the pages.

Another thumbs up from me in addition to lined pages is that Saturday and Sunday are also included as full days to pages. So often diaries limit the space for weekends which would drive me crazy. When I was working full time it would be the weekends when I would have to run most of my errands, particularly blog tasks so its great to see that I can carry on as normal without limited space.

In short for me I will be using this less of a typical diary and more of a dated note or list book - which I guess is what a diary is! I'm sure there will be some days left blank and I'm keen to investigate some stamps or stickers for repetitive daily tasks that will be time saving in the future and if I'm so inclined I can pretty the pages with some washi tape if the mood strikes me.

Diaries are very personal things depending on your lifestyle and requirements but I'm Busy B will have one for you.

What diary method do you use?

Life Update | I'm a Full Time Blogger!

One doesn't have to be a genius to note there has been an impromptu break on Florence and Mary. If you follow me on social media I'm sure you will put it down to my recent holidays. As one friend said I appear to never been in the country and that is part of the reason and why there was an initial break following my return from Menorca. Once home I was unable to get back into the groove before departing to Ibiza and then subsequent events have led to my break in posting being longer than I expected. But all shall be explained...

The big news of the moment is I have recently been made redundant, hence my slightly click-bait inducing title. My redundancy is bittersweet. I was at my company for ten years and had made many friends and lots of fond memories but recent events had changed the course of both my role and environment and as such moving on is a positive step.

'At my age' to be in a position where I can take some time out and think about my next move, what I want to do next and as a blogger enjoy the luxury of 'full time blogging' is exciting. It's also a great time of year to be 'unemployed' with Halloween and Christmas festivities on the cards - I'm off to a Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday so stay tuned for that.

To address the cliched 'full time blogging' aspect of things, what does that mean for you as readers? Please don't worry that I'm going to go all editorial on you, that's not really who I am but you will see a more varied mix of content. I find my beauty reviews very easy to write, and as such are quicker than lifestyle posts with their abundance of photos requiring editing, and they won't disappear but with more time on my hands I hope to be able to catch up on sharing some of my recent trips, perhaps one or two 'chatty' posts and being home in the day means it's time to up my photography game and even starting sharing more images of products in action - although some of these dull days have already hindered me.

Whilst I don't expect my 'full time blogging' to be something I continue with long term, I like the office environment, I do want to see what I can achieve in my time off with Florence and Mary and hope you do too. You may see a new blog layout, there may be one or two more sponsored posts as I look at monetising things (I'll spare you the typical disclaimers about remaining honest and hope you know me well enough) but I intend for any changes to be positive ones for you and me.

Continuing the cliches I'm also thinking about dabbling with YouTube. It's always been in back of my mind for a while now and my niece and nephew are very keen for me to start a channel so with their encouragement how could I not. The editing process has always put me off, but again, with the luxury of time I can concentrate on learning and getting that right without battling to get blog posts up for the week in addition to working full time. If you have any tips, or suggestions for that matter please do send them my way.

Exciting times ahead, I hope you're looking forward to it.

Getting to know me tag

I'm sure I've answered or alluded to the answer of one of two of these questions over the course of blogging but there's nothing like a good tag post so grab a cuppa and find out a little more about me you may not know.

1.  Are you named after anyone?
The story goes my dad heard the name Victoria at work and thought it was nice and there you have it. They will never call me any shortened version of Victoria either! My middle name is Mary after my nan

2. When was the last time you cried?
I'm not really a crier and usually it's when I'm angry rather than upset or commonly through laughter. In fact that reminds me of a fit of giggles my friend and I had a work due to a rather childish eavesdrop on another colleagues phone conversation that resulted in some tears.

3. Do you have any kids?
None myself but I'm lucky enough to be surrounding lot's of little people through friends and family. Whether due to my single status or not children are not something I yearn for and I much prefer being the cool auntie.

4. If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself?
Of course!

5. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
I do much to a colleague at works frustration.

6. Will you ever bungee-jump?
Nope. Riding the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas was proof I'm not a fan of heights.

7. What is your favourite cereal?
I love the American cereal Lucky Charms but I'm more likely to indulge in a spot of granola and yoghurt.

8. What is the first thing you notice about people?
Their shoes!

9. What is your eye colour?
Somewhere between green and brown - it changes

10. Scary movie or happy endings?
I do love a happy ending but I'm quite partial to a scary movie, the Scream trilogy is one of my favourite films

11. Favourite Smells?
Fresh autumnal mornings, Mahogany Teakwood Candles, Cinnamon at Christmas and you can't beat a good aftershave on a man

12. Summer or Winter?
Can I be difficult and say Autumn?

13. Computer or television?
This is a tricky one for me as I find it hard to concentrate on one thing at a time. It drives my brother mad that I will watch a film whist tapping away on the laptop.

14. What is the furthest you've ever been from home?
I think it would be Hawaii earlier this year

15. Do you have any special talents?
My capacity to drink and go without sleep

16. Where were you born?
I'm an Essex girl born and bred…. pass the white stilettos.

17. What are your hobbies?
This here little blog of course

18. Do you have any pets?
No but there is always the hope I will own a Chihuahuas one day.

19. Favourite movie?
As mentioned in the earlier question I love the Scream trilogy, Bridesmaids is a classic that will always cheer me up, Gone with the Wind I can watch over and over again and I've special place for the X-Men movies.

20. Do you have any siblings?
One 'little' brother

21. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I don't ever want to grow up

I hope you enjoyed finding out a little more about me, link me up if you answer this tag on your blog.

The Autumn Tag

I saw the Autumn Tag over on Carissa's blog Vanilla Crush and as we are entering my favourite time of year I thought I'd share some of the reason's why.

1. What's your favourite seasonal drink from Starbucks / Costa / Cafe Nero etc
Gingerbread Latte's all the way and I'm not fussy where it comes from although I do always but the Starbucks Gingerbread Syrup and keep at home and work to use.

2. Accessories - what do you opt for, scarf, boots, gloves?
I'd say all of the above and have just picked up a lovely new pair of knee highed boots from Marks & Spencer for this Autumn. I do enjoy a pair of leather gloves although as an iPhone user they can make things a little difficult!

3. Music - what's your favourite music to listen to during Autumn?
Is it too early to start with the Christmas songs playlist?

4. Perfume - what's your favourite scent for this time of year?
Usually I don't tend to change my fragrances but for my birthday back in April Ben brought me Chanel Noir which was a little too heavy for the Summer so I'm looking forward to wearing that as the evenings draw in.

5. Candles - what scents will you be burning this season?
Having just visited the States I of course picked up my favourite Mahoganny Teakwood from Bath and Bodyworks and will definitely be enjoying that on cosy nights in.

6. What do you love most about Autumn?
So so much. From Halloween to Bonfire Night and then my nephews birthday which heralds the beginning of Christmas fun (we always take him to see Santa) there is so much to enjoy as well as crisp mornings. My favourite days are when there is a chill in the air but the sun is shining.

7. Favourite make up look?
It's only recently due to blogging I've acknowledged the changing of colours with the seasons. I have some lovely lipstick shades I picked up from the US drugstore last month which are perfect for Autumn and my shorter nails always look better when wearing Chanel Rouge Noir and similar berry tones.

8. What are you looking forward to most in Autumn?
I guess all that I mentioned in question six!

Feel free to put this tag up on your blog and don't forget to link me up if you do.

Blogger Love

Lorac Pro Palette 2 link / Tarte Rainforest After Dark Palette  link
As a blogger since 2007 I've seen many changes in the whole blogger world and community, some good some bad. I started blogging in a place where blogs were in the most part corners of the internet where you would post from a more personal place about what you had done at the weekend or share recent purchases and crafty makes. Of course some where always better than others but it was less about Pinterest styling than saying hey here's a fantastic carrot cake recipe.

Of course it's fantastic that blogging has now become a career choice and that so many people choose to start a blog and they have become professional platforms. I too have benefitted from working with brands and PRs, getting invited to some fabulous events and received payment for posts but there is some sadness for the days when blog buttons where shared rather than sold as advertising space and things seemed less competitive and comments were left not to say 'follow for follow' but to converse with the writer in some way.

Today I wanted to show some gratitude to one blogging friend, Grace from Pink in the City. We have been 'internet friends' for a long time. Sharing comments on blog posts and likes on instagram. A few weeks ago I posted a picture of the Tarte Rainforest After Dark Eyes palette on instagram venting my frustration at having finally decided to place a Sephora order was told that this item couldn't be shipped to the UK (it's limited edition). Next an email came from Grace to ask me my address and days later a box arrived containing not only the Tarte Palette but the famous Lorac Pro Palette 2 - both gorgeously wrapped I might add.

To say I was over the moon would be an understatement and I will admit that both those palettes were swooned over most of that evening. The accompanying letter contained the fantastic news that hopefully Grace would be in London next year and we would finally be able to meet. When I asked Grace if there was anything I could send by way of thanks she just asked that I enjoyed them.

In a blogging world where much is done to score page views and followers it was fantastic to be reminded of the real enjoyment that came from earlier blogging days where it was about the interaction with bloggers and making friends even if just over the world wide web. Gifts, giveaways and swaps were sent just because rather than to hit monthly stats or targets. I'm lucky enough to have met many blogging friends over the years such as Josie-Mary and those who I have yet to meet still speak with regularly such as Candypop or Mrs M to the more recent friends made with beauty lovers like Alice and Carissa to attend events so I consider myself lucky.

This post is in no way a critisim to anyone as we all must roll with the times and adapt to changes of which I too benefit and I applaud anyone that is making a success of their blog in whatever way works for them. That said this blog is my hobby and as such should be something fun. I want to remember that and not feel guilty if I spend Sunday watching tv and decide to have a day off from blogging because the reasons why I started and why I continue to blog are that I enjoy writing and the pleasure of interacting with people from all round the world. I know that the true readers of Florence and Mary will  forgive me for being too hungover to schedule a post one day or encourage me to take the week off so I can spend the weekend with friends and family and still be there when the next post goes live.

So thank you to Grace for the amazing gifts and more importantly the timely reminder of why I started this blog. Thank you to anyone who reads and comments on my little place on the internet, it is always appreciated.

The British Tag

Midwinter Domino Teacup
Like many I have seen The British Tag doing the rounds on YouTube and when Carissa popped up on her blog I thought I would follow suit. I believe the done thing is to make a cup of tea before reading so pop the kettle on.

1. How many cups of tea do you have a day and how many sugars?
The amount of tea I drink varies day to day but I would say at least 5 a day - I love my tea. I miss living at home with my parents especially because of an evening my mum would always bring me a cup of tea up in bed. Most nostalgic tea memories are from staying with my nan and in the morning she would make us both a cuppa and we'd sit in bed drinking it and reading books. And no sugar for me just sweetener, and only one.

2. What is your favourite part of a roast?
Living alone I don't tend to go through the bother of cooking a full roast very often but when I do it's all about the roast potatoes and veggies. That said all the sides are amazing whether it's veggies, stuffing or yorkshire puddings.

3. What is your favourite dunking biscuit?
I'm not really a 'drunker' as I can't bear the biscuit remnants floating in the top of a cup but I am partial to a chocolate chip cookie now and again. That said I am partial to a packet of crisps with a cuppa - I'm all about the savoury.

4. What is your favourite quintessentially British pass time?Leaving in close proximity to Epping Forest I should say something like going for a ramble in the woods but the reality is I'm more likely to be found in the local pub with my parents, particularly on a Friday evening or Sunday lunchtime.

5. What is your favourite word?
I tend to say 'awesome' a lot but I wouldn't call that a British word? My mum still says 'courting' which amuses me no end.

6. Cockney rhyming slang?
With a family who all hail from the East End I'm not unfamiliar with cockney rhyming slang although it's not something used frequently… as I type this I'm trying to think of phrases that are used in a more everyday way but nothing springs to mind.

7. What is your favourite sweet?
I love Wine Gums, Moams, Fruitella's and especially those jelly strawberries you find in pick and mix

8. What would your pub be called?
The Queen Vic of course!

9. Who is your No. 1 British person?
Queen Elizabeth I - she started girl power well before he Spice Girls came on the scene.

10. What is your favourite shop and restaurant?
Fortnum and Mason without a doubt. My mum and I have a Christmas tradition of going up there for a visit the Saturday before Christmas as well as the odd visit throughout the year. Whether it's the relaxed parlour for panini's and ice cream or The Fountain Restaurant for a slap up English breakfast or just simply a browse of the food hall. You can read about my previous trips here and here.

11. What British song pops into your head?
The 90's British take over from the likes of Blur, Oasis and the Spice Girls all come to mind when asked this question although 'Three Lions' is one of those songs that has it's British roots.

12. Marmite?
Love it!

Seven Deadly Sins Beauty Tag

I try to limit the pressure of blogging to only posting Monday to Friday's but as I have managed to get ahead of myself with photos and scheduling I thought I'd throw the odd blogger tag in over the weekends where possible. I read the Seven Deadly Sins Beauty Tag over at Makeup by Candlelight and thought it a worth competitor to share with you.

1. GREED; what is your most expensive and inexpensive beauty item?
This is a difficult one as I have quite an equal split of drugstore and high end beauty items but I plumped for the blogger fave, Collections Concealer and my new Narscissist Eyeshadow Palette which I finally used last weekend!

2. WRATH; what beauty products do you have a love/hate relationship with?
This question on the other hand was easy, definitely lip gloss. I have a small collection of glosses and even featured one in the previous weeks every day lip look link but yet I'm not so much of a fan. I can't bear anything too sticky and nothing worse than when your hair gets stuck to your lips but then there are times when a gloss on the lips is just the look you need.

3. GLUTTONY; what are your most delicious beauty products?
My Charlotte Tilbury make up collection which my best friend gave me for Christmas with the statement 'I can't believe I've spent this much on make up'. It's one of those collections I'm just happy to look at and enjoy but really should start using it. He actually came round whilst I had this laid out for photos and did the 'oh is that Charlotte Tilbury make up… how nice… who brought that… do you know how expensive it is'.

4. SLOTH; what beauty product do you neglect due to laziness?
Body lotion might be off topic but it's certainly the one product I have the most trouble trying to get into a habit of using. I've recently purchased the Vaseline Body Lotion Spray which has meant I'm more likely to use this when in a rush but it's still not a product I automatically reach for.

5. PRIDE; what beauty product gives you the most self confidence?
Definitely red lipstick. For years whenever I needed a pick me up I'd reach for a trusty red, the most recent addition being Mac's Rhianna Viva Glam.

6. LUST; what attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex
Physically eyes are always a plus for me but ultimately I love to see passion and enthusiasm in a guy whether it's for their favourite football team or band.. not quite sure how this question is relevant to the tag but there you go!

7. ENVY; what items would you most like to receive as a gift?
I think I'd happily open anything from Chanel.

Hope you enjoyed today's tag, please do post on your blog and don't forget to let me know if you join in!

The Beauty Blogger Tag | Part 2

Photo taken on the floor on my best friends house a few years ago. It would drive him nuts before a night out when I would pour my make up on the floor and get to work

Following on from yesterday's tag which you can read here I have another for you today. It was the fabulous Merry's Musings who tagged me to join in with another beauty blogger tag so grab your cuppa and sit down for a read.

Why did you start blogging and how long have you been blogging for?
I've been blogging for since 2007 and if you fancy a look in to my world pre-beauty/pre-Florence & Mary check out my first blog here.

Whose blog did you fall in love with first?
If I'm completely honest with you I the first blog I turned to would be hard to name. I know that Brocante Home was a big influence back in the day and one I still read. As for beauty blogging I'm sure it was the usual names you'd expect to hear that I stumbled across.

What was the first blogosphere hyped about product that you bought? Was it worth the hype?
I think it was probably Barry M Gelly Nails which I hated on their first use when I still had acrylics. You can read the post here. Then I joined in with Mac's All About Orange range link and Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer link.

What are your five favorite things about blogging and being a Beauty Blogger?
  1. Beauty Bloggers: I'd been lucky enough to meet bloggers in my pre-beauty days but these days at least a month doesn't go by when I'm meeting up with Carissa and Alice to head to a new product launch or press day. It's great to have friends who really understand blogging, especially when we all have the tasks of juggling our full time jobs.
  2. Beauty Products: If ever there was an excuse to buy a new lipstick it's the 'it's to blog' one is the best. I love hearing about and trying new products, tracking down limited editions and sharing my finds and love with fellow enthusiasts.
  3. Having a hobby: I always wanted to be a writer when I was young but took the 'sensible' get a job that pays the bills route which I'm lucky enough now is in a job I enjoy. Blogging allows me to enjoy writing on a daily basis and explore an interest I've always had and there's always something to fill my time if I'm bored whether it's a new blog post or reading someone else's blog.
  4. Photography: I love the sense of achievement when I take a photo, look at it and think, that isn't half bad. I'm by no means the best photographer out there and many bloggers leave me swooning at photos for hours and hoping I could one day be half as good but continual blogging means I'm learning about various techniques and learning to improve day by day.
  5. Twitter Chats: I was never really a tweeter before I saw such an established place for it in the beauty blogging community. Rest assured if I'm bored or fancy a chat one evening there will be a chat taking place or add the #bbloggers tag onto any tweet when you have a question or piece of gossip and you'll be able to interact with fellow enthusiasts.
What have you learnt from being a Beauty Blogger?
I suppose as I've said above there's the photography aspect of blogging which is a skill that I'm learning slowly… there's always little things you learn and pick up. Even since changing my blog layout I've learnt to resize photos so they fit nicely, or there's the piece of HTML to tag your blog on comments. It's the little things you pick up along the way - oh and the collages. I'm still not the best at them but I'm slowly piecing the odd one together.

Have you changed anything since becoming a Beauty Blogger?
I'm sure I'm more consistent since beauty blogging. The great thing about the vast topic is you always have something to talk about whether it's a new shampoo or lipstick you've picked up. I'm actually planning a spending ban which you'll hear about tomorrow because I've literally got to the point of having too many fabulous things to share with everyone and if I don't stop my purse is going to be unable to handle it!

What advice would you give to a beauty blogger just starting out?
I think the biggest piece of advice to anyone looking to blog is to just do it. I never really made a conscious decision to beauty blog I just realised there was a place I could talk and learn about beauty products. Things like my empties post encourage me to use products and reading other blogs introduce me to different brands and sometimes just the serum or face mask that has been missing in my routine. Grab your favourite lipstick, shampoo or moisturiser, take a photo and blog it… the beauty blogger arena may be vast at the moment but if it's a passion you share join in. As long as you're not looking to blog solely for money and fame then go for it.

What are your top 5 makeup brands?
  1. MAC: Mac to me really is the king of make up and will always be my go to for eye shadows, lipsticks (although their price is starting to make them prohibitive) and brushes.
  2. Sleek Makeup: Sleek are one of my favourite drugstore brands from their highly pigmented blushes which give Nars a run for their money to my latest find of their eyebrown pencil - stay tuned for a review coming soon.
  3. Chanel: From their foundations, cream blushes to my favourite product of all time Chanel Les Beiges there's nothing better than a treat from the Chanel counter. Uber luxurious packaging with products that match up to expectations.
  4. Rimmel: A drugstore brand I had turned my nose up to over the years but recently their foundations, concealers, lipsticks and shadow sticks have made their way into my collection and happily so. I'd ever go so far to stay that their shadow stick is on par if not better than Charlotte Tilbury's version. Stick around for a review comparing the two in the next week or so.
  5. I don't feel like I have a fifth stand out brand so I'm going to leave it at 4!
Recommend your top 5 beauty products
  1. MAC 217 Blending Brush: I wouldn't be without this brush in my collection. Yes MAC brushes are expensive and yes there are some acceptable dupes out there but this one is king. My eye make up has improved dramatically since adding this to my collection.
  2. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer: I have a real issue with my dark circles under my eyes so I wouldn't be without this compact and easy to use concealer. If anything is going to banish those dark circles it's this baby.
  3. Barry M Gelly Nails: As I said on first use I wasn't impressed but since removing my acrylic nails this has been a stand out nail brand for me. If ever I want to treat myself to a new colour, or am indeed looking for something in particular I'm pretty confident I'll find it on their stand.
  4. Urban Decay Eye Primer: The curse of oily eyelids is mine and this eye primer is about the only thing I've found that stops my eye shadow from creasing before lunchtime. I'll recommend to anyone who listens.
  5. Chanel Les Beiges: Not the cheapest of products and one I abstained from buying for long enough that it sold out first time round. When I finally tracked it down I couldn't believe I'd left it so long. I love this powder either alone for minimal make up days or to finish my heavier foundation looks. It really does give a fabulous glow and I always have it in my make up bag.
So thats the end of this impromptu tag weekend. Do feel free to add either of these tags to your blogs and let me know if you do so I can have a read. I can't wait to see what everyone else says is there top 5 products.

The Beauty Blogger Tag | Part 1

Thank you to Alice for this photo and Carissa for allowing me to pinch from her post!

I'm not one for usually posting at weekends but as I have two different beauty blogger tags available I thought they'd be fun for this weekend - stay tuned for another tomorrow.

1. Is your hair naturally curly or straight?
Straight, I never use straighteners and the minute I put a section behind my ear or a curl of some sort the kink will stay whether I like it or not.

2. What is your natural hair colour?
Dark Brown

3. Do you dye it yourself or go to a salon?
Due to my dark hair and declining age a few pesky grey hairs are starting to appear so I have to throw on an at home dye every 6 weeks. I use L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss and you'll often see it popping up in my empties posts.

4. How often do you wash your hair?
During the week daily unless I oversleep and have to resort to my lazy hairstyle (stay tuned for a post coming up on what that is!). At the weekend it varies depending on my plans but if I can give it a break from the constant washing I will.

5. Do you wear the same style every day or change it?
Day to day it's very much wash and go but at the weekends I try and throw a few curls into the mix if I have some time on my hands.

6. Do you do your own mani/pedi or go to a salon?
Generally I keep things in check at home but I do love a salon pedicure. Luckily a good friend has recently qualified in mani/pedi's so when we have a catch up I put her to work for me.

7. How often to you change your nail polish?
About once a week, usually on a Sunday as part of my back to work pamper.

8. Do you polish your toes in the winter, too or just in the summer?
I always have my toes painted, they looked naked without a bit of red.

9. How long does it take to put on your makeup?
Monday to Friday it takes me however long my journey is from Stratford - Liverpool Street on the underground!

10. What do you do first? Face or eyes?
Always my face as I put foundation on before leaving the house and the rest is done on the train. Whilst I understand the logic of doing eyes first I can't get my head round it.

11. Do you "collect" makeup or just buy what you need when you need it?
Next week I'll be sharing my plans for a spending ban with you references my collecting tendancies. I love buying new releases and would love to own every colour lipstick from certain ranges or every MAC eyeshadow even if I never wore them.

12. How often do you wear false eyelashes?
I've only recently delved back into false eyelashes and for nights out they are usually a feature - I am from Essex after all.

13. Do you do a full face of makeup every day?
Only during the week for work and that varies depending on what I've thrown in the make up bag and how late/hungover I am. Weekend looks depend on my plans, if it's just me at home and I'm not playing with new products you'll find me make up free.

14. Do you wear makeup when you are home alone (or with family)?
No, I don't really understand the minimal make up looks for Sunday sitting on the sofa watching tv on your own. I like to give me skin a break when I can.

15. Will you leave the house without makeup?
Yep, it's not unlikely you would see me on a Saturday in Tesco doing my shopping without make up #shocker!

16. How many high end products do you have?
It's definitely mixed, there's nothing better than a Chanel compact or similar but I'm glad through blogging I've found some fantastic drugstore products.

17. How often do you wash your makeup brushes?
I wash them around every other week and the need to do this was never more evident than when I missed a clean and my eye make up looked terrible because of it.

18. Do you plan your OOTD every night or decide when you are getting dressed?
If I am heading somewhere special I always like to plan in advance, but for day to day I just decide when getting dressed.

19. How often do you change your handbag?
It literally depends on mood and plans. If I'm going out I like something for my shoulder, if to and from the office it's usually a handheld. I can change it up every day/week or another I'll use the same bag all month.

20. What time do you get up & go to sleep?
I usually go to sleep around 11pm and midnight. My alarms start going off from 6am although this past week I've been trying to get into an early to bed regime.

21. How often & when do you workout?
Never is the truthful answer although I'm trying to start building some exercise into my weekly routine as I'm off on holiday in 6 weeks.

22. Left-handed or Right-handed?
Left handed, as is my brother and nephew.

23. How tall are you?
5ft 3. I'd always thought I was 5ft 4 but recently discovered that was not the case.

24. Do you speak a foreign language?
Not at all, I got an E in French at school.

25. How many pets do you have?
None although I'd love a Chihuahuha if I was home more.

26. How often are you on Blogger?
Far too much, definitely daily.

27. Do you read the comments posted blogs?
I've always tried to ensure that every commenter to my blog received a reply (by email) or comment on their blog. I've just recently started replying to comments directly on my blog posts so that everyone else can join in the chat if they wish.

28. Do you keep a list of products to try as you see other posts?
Definitely, there's the beauty one, the skincare one, the Mac one, the American one and they're scattered between my phone and notebooks.

29. How did you come up with your blog name?
Florence and Mary are the names of my grandmothers.

30. What kind of camera do you use for photographs?
I use the Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR for my photos although my mum has broke the screen so I'm looking to upgrade. Of course the Canon 600 is on my list although I'm hoping to start with the Canon EOS M for my holiday so I can try my hand at vlogging.

31. How often do you clean your house?
I have a cleaner who comes every 2 weeks and I love her. I'd go without food to ensure I could afford her services.

32. What is your favourite colour?
Red

33. What is your favourite beauty/fashion magazine?
I'm not really a magazine reader as I often found they were not targeted to my age (either younger or older), repeated the same thing and had more than enough reading material through blogging. That said last weekend I picked up a copy of Red which I enjoyed and I have an iPad subscription to Allure.

34. Do you swear?
Far too much for a lady!

35. What are you doing with the rest of your day?
Today is a day for blogging and straightening my flat up before I head to a friends for dinner this evening.

Florence and Mary | A New Look

It's not just my bedroom that has been having a redesign, my blog has too thanks to the wonderful Serena at Pretty Wild Things.

I appreciate that many blogs are leaning towards a similar layout these days but the simple layouts were the ones I would enjoy visiting myself and it felt right that as I streamlined my home my blog followed suit.

Yellow is a colour I've been admiring lately so I asked Serena if she could find a balance between clean and simple with an injection of yellow to stop it appearing too bland and I think she got it spot on.

I was said to see my Florence and Mary characters disappearing but it was one of those situations were I felt I was trying to fit them where they didn't blog.

You'll also have noticed some nice handy tabs at the top of the page. I've been blogging for many many years and this blog is primarily for me and is a hobby but I'm lucky enough to work with various brands and PRs on occasion so it was necessary to put in place the necessary disclaimers in place. Rest assured  all opinions on this here space of the internet are honest and true and I will happily let you know when something has been gifted to me or a post is sponsored.

In the past I would always refer to my blog as one of the Lifestyle variety purely due to it containing any ramblings I decided to publish to the outside world. Of course it will not have escaped anyone's notice that I'm sharing an awful lot of beauty babble these days which may or not appeal to all readers and likewise for the latest restaurant outing or book review so you can direct yourself to the Beauty or Lifestyle sections if you're more specific in your tastes.

If you're in need a blog makeover do pop over and see Serena, she charges a very fair price, understands to what her clients want and didn't moan once about any of my tweaks or changes.

Super Gorgeous September // Photo-a-Day Challenge

I made a last minute decision 10 minutes ago to join in Super Gorgeous' Photo-a-Day challenge over at Instagram - find me here. Slightly worrying I made this choice knowing that today's photo is of your hair and I have literally got out of a bath and tied it up on top of my head following an oil treatment and wearing no make up but that's all part of the fun!

Let me know if you're joining in with the challenge and your instagram user names.

Get ready for some Bloglovin

It's no secret that Google Reader will be no more this time next week and varying levels of panic have ensued in the blogger communities. I had initial blood pressure rising for about 5 minutes when I saw the announcement and then gave myself a stern talking to, looked at the alternatives and promptly switched to Bloglovin to read my favourite blogs.

I made this switch as soon as I heard that Bloglovin would eventually be no more so decided not to take advantage of the import of my reading list (although from other bloggers it seems quick and simple to do) and use it as a decluttering exercise - although more seem to have been added than removed!

In the couple of months I've been using Bloglovin I have to say I have only one complaint in that I can't tag blogs to file and star to read later in the same way I would in Google Reader. I'll often look at blogs quickly whilst at work or out and about and want to read in detail later. You can mark posts as unread but I prefer to acknowledge they've been read and use the 'like' option although I do feel bad when I click 'unlike' having read in full.

There is no way of filing posts via Bloglovin unfortunately so it's a case of printing, making notes and/or filing in a bookmarks folder but I've managed to work round that without too much disappointment.

I love that you can comment directly within Bloglovin's website, something that wasn't possible on Google Reader. I prefer commenting on blogs via my MacBook as I prefer a keyboard to type on than the iPad so it makes it a quick process. Something of note for Blogger bloggers; if you had a comment page which replaced the blogs page itself (ie does not appear at the bottom of the post or in a pop up window) then it will bring up an error in Bloglovin. I get around this by right clicking on the 'post a comment' link to open in a new tab or window but not everyone will or know to do this. I myself had to change the settings on my blog to allow easier commenting for my readers.

Another accidental discovery on the iPad and iPhone apps was that if you pull the page up as you reach the end of a post the next in sequence from your reading list will appear - this is certainly making on the go reading easier.

You claim your blog quite easily and Bloglovin have various widgets available for bloggers to add to posts so people can easily add your blog to their reading lists - you'll notice one now appears at the bottom of each of my posts but a simple word search seems to bring up most of the blogs I've been looking for lately.

There seems to be a change in the way the blogging community read blogs since my early days when readers were King now there are so many social media platform allowing us to Tweet or Facebook our links. I find myself reading many blogs via a tweeted link but Bloglovin is still essential to make sure you never miss a post and there are many ways to discover new blogs through looking at the popular posts pages, recommendations etc.

Of course the panic doesn't end there, there is much confusion around GFC (Google Friends Connect) and from what I can gather this is not due for retirement on 1st July with Google Reader but my hunches tell me that it won't be too far behind with Google+ being the platform they are pushing everyone towards, that said if anyone knows how the hell we're supposed to be using it please give me an idiots guide because I do not have a clue!

It would be great if you join me over at Bloglovin by clicking here or the button below - the other great thing about Bloglovin is that unless the subscriber requests to do so privately you will be emailed to notify you or your new 'follower' and in some cases find a new blog to read.

BEDM: Favourite Social Media

Social media is a funny one for me, on one hand I love it and as a blogger it's an invaluable tool, blogging itself is a form of social media which of course I love but the likes of Facebook and Twitter are somewhat hard for me to dive into. I'm not very good in 'real life' at small talk and social media feels like that to a degree. I seem to always veer towards thinking who cares whether I'm at Tesco doing my food shop or whats to see what I had for dinner and is my life interesting enough for an instagram upload but on the other hand happily sit and blog about a recent shopping trip or my latest outfit choice.

All that said I have accounts on the various platforms and tend to have phases of love for each. Pinterest is ongoing, I mean what's not to love about looking at so many gorgeous images whether it's interiors, food or handbags and it's the perfect way to while away an evening. Instagram was a phase which petered off due to my faulty iPhone camera (subject to change now I have my new iPhone 5!) and of course the new A Beautiful Mess app.

Facebook I've never really been a fan of due to the variety of people I'm friends with, old school friends, work colleagues and family members and what status might be appropriate for one is not for the other and Twitter seems to find that balance as it's not as widely used in my real life circle. I'm new to Twitter in so much as previously it was something I dipped into now and then, followed a few celebrities and rarely tweeted. Now I'm realising the possibilities of it's use as a blogger, making new friends and the simple pleasure of having a tweet retweeted or favourited. I'm still apprehensive about whether I'm tweeting to myself and should I continue but I feel like it's here to stay - it's quick, simple and more importantly I don't think I would know half of what is going on in the world were it not for my Twitter timeline.

And this post wouldn't be complete without links below to my pages on the net!

BEDM: Five Fave Blogs

Today I'm to share the blog love and tell you about my five favourite blogs and why I love them. Now if you were to look at my bloglovin list you would be well aware what a challenge this is for me, not to mention the numerous blogs I enjoy reading via links on Twitter or the vlogs I'm discovering on YouTube. I'm quite eclectic in the blogs I read and love to look at a variety of topics and styles so this list by no means covers ALL my favourites as different blogs speak to me during different moods and if you do not see your blog here please do not think I don't think very highly of it!

I know when I see a post from Natasha at Candy Pop that I'm going to be swooning at her photography. I really don't know want I want more, to live in her home or be blessed with her photography skills! This blog is pure kitsch with class and it helps she's a fellow bag lover.

Before you take a peek at Rosie's blog make sure you have eaten because I can guarantee within seconds you'll be salivating over one of her gorgeous recipes or meals. Without The Londoner I may never have discovered Patty & Bun or Slutty Brownies and believe my friends, my life would be lesser had I not experienced either of these delights. Remember, I warned you - eat before you read...

Ah Sadie, I love this girl and if I am ever blessed with children I want to be the very stay at home mum she is. Her daughter is one of the luckiest girls around, she has a Cath Kidston wallpapered Fairy Tower in her back garden, even I at 34 would love that! And she makes stuff... and I don't mean occasionally... ALL THE TIME! She see's something in a magazine or pinterest and just gives it a go and I truly love that about her. It might not always be perfect (although it looks like it is to me!) she's given it a go.

Next up is Teresa a girl who may even love New York more than I! And she's not just well versed in NY activity, Teresa is a whirlwind in our beautiful city, the first in line for every show, restaurant and cookery demonstration there is! And what's the best thing, we've even met... in real life along with my friend Kelly, Rachel Ashwell tagged along once but who can blame her!

And last but by no means least is Alison of Brocante Home fame. Alison's is one of the first blogs of it's kind that I found in the UK. When I first started blogging many years ago due to a love of car boot sales and longing for my own home there were an abundance of American bloggers but I could find few in the UK. But find Alison I did. I truly love her style of writing and her puttery treats make me want to wrap ribbons and lace over everything and where possible I follow her mantra "decant decant decant", check her out - she'll make you see the pretty in everything.

So there you have it, some of my favourite blogs and I'm hoping this weekend when I have some time to relax with the laptop and read through many of the fellow participants posts in the blog every day in May challenge I will find many many more new blogs to read and enjoy.
