August Favourite // Dove Purely Pampering Nourishing Lotion

Coconut and Jasmine Petals

When I was asked to try Dove's Purely Pampering Nourishing Lotion I was immediately drawn to it's claim that it would leave skin nourished for 10 days. I've always been notoriously bad about using body lotions, I might have a spur of the moment urge to lavish some cream on after a bath or maybe add some sparkle for a night out like I did here but as a general rule it was something I never really bothered with. So a product that suggests I do not have to apply on a daily basis was perfect for me.

Since receiving the Coconut Milk and Jasmine Petals* scent I have used it with great regularity (not daily but we can't expect miracles!) and this very bottle will be featuring in my next Empties post having used it all - I do not think in my life I have used a body lotion up in it's entirety.

I love coconut scents and with the addition of relaxing jasmine made for a perfect combo. The light formula has been perfect to apply at the end of a hot and sticky night when the last thing you want to do is climb into bed with creams that are too heavy and going to make you uncomfortable.

It's also made a good addition to my faux tanning routine and worked in perfect harmony avoiding pasty pins and scaly dry patches. It's an all round winner in my book and that's why it's my August favourite.

#theSOproject // Week 2 Concealer

rimmel wake me up concealer

Simply put concealer is used to mask imperfections such as dark circles and blemishes yet the debate is open as to whether you apply before or after or even instead of your foundation. Not so simple is finding the right shade for your skin tone and the imperfection you're trying to hide.

You should have two different concealers, one for blemishes and one for dark circles. Dark circles benefit from concealers with a illuminating quality that you certainly don't want on your blemishes. I'm currently using Rimmel's Wake Me Up Concealer which I sweep under my eyes once I've applied my eye make up.

For blemishes I switch between Collection 2000's Lasting Perfection concealer and holy grail product to many, Bobbi Brown's Cream concealer (which I also apply under my eyes). I apply using a version of Lisa Eldridges photoshopping technique (see her concealer video in full here) with my fingers and blending with a Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush. I also choose to apply concealer to blemishes after my foundation has been applied, in large part as I'm lucky to not have too many blemishes to conceal and it's mainly my dark circles I'm trying to mask.

Collection 2000's concealer has become a star product of late with every beauty blogger praising it. I was using this on one occasion to cover a rather unsightly spot. Later in the evening my sister in law had gone to the cinema and she treated me to a large chocolate sundae which I managed to get all down my face (yes I'm 34 going on 5!). I cleaned chocolate sauce from around my mouth when she pointed out a bit I'd missed, unfortunately it was my spot but she'd only noticed it at that moment having been so well concealed.

If you're looking for your first concealer and on a budget Collection 2000 is definitely a good place to start but if the funds allow I would head to a Bobbi Brown counter and have your shade colour matched. Whilst their concealers retail at £18.50 they are long lasting.

And if case you're interested other concealers on my wish list include Nars Creamy Concealer, Origins Plantscription and Mac Studio Finish Concealers, let me know if there's anything missing you think I need to try.

Next week please return to catch the next #theSOproject post on Foundation; that one will be a biggie!

What's in my handbag - September 2013

whats in my handbag

whats in my handbag

whats in my handbag

whats in my handbag

Surprisingly in all my years of blogging I have never put together a 'What's in my handbag' post and whilst sorting out my bag Sunday evening for the week ahead I decided it was time.

I'm actually one of those annoying people who sorts their bag at the end of each evening. I can't bear carrying around old wrappers and receipts so I have to make sure everything is thrown away and more importantly I like to know everything is ready in the morning as it's safe to say more often than not, I'll be running late!

First we have the bag, my gorgeous Prada tote purchased back in April. At some stage I will be running a series of posts on my handbag where I go into more detail about my collection but let it be said this is definitely a favourite.

And now onto the contents

Yes people I'm old school and do not read books on a kindle or iPad as I'm an active user of my local library. Yes there are books available on Amazon for zero pence but it's not often the case for the specific new releases that I'm looking to read and as I tend to read about 4 books a month its far thriftier to utilise my library. I'm undecided what I think of The Longest Day by Paige Toon at the moment although I didn't want to stop reading and return this to the library at the weekend so it was interesting enough to keep me reading.

I used to post a weekly series; What I'm Reading - is anyone interested in my bringing that back? You can see previous book posts here and let me know in the comments or tweet me @florenceandmary

Such a large can of Batiste Dry Shampoo doesn't usually feature in my handbags contents but in my draw at work. As I was out on Friday evening after work I threw this in my bag to freshen up a little and it has since been returned to its usual home.

There's always a deodorant hanging around in my bag ready for a freshen up when needed. Sure Cool Pink Antiperspirant* in their new compressed can's are perfect. The underground hasn't been pleasant during the Summer and I've found a spritz of this before I jump on the train keeps me fresh and dry for the journey home - now if only other fellow commuters on the underground paid such attention to their deodorising needs!

There was a time when a tinted lip balm was all I'd wear to work. Those days have changed as my lipstick collection testifies but I still keep one to hand as I'm not great at touch ups and find a quick slick of Blistex Lip Brilliance* in Blush is sufficient in case I bump into someone on my way home from work whilst keeping my lips soft.

I hate the feeling of dry hands and have hand creams on my desk, by my sofa, at sinks and of course one in my handbag. L'Occitane Hand Cream is an old favourite of mine and leaves hands moisturised without feeling greasy.

I love what I call a 'mummy's purse' that I can fill comfortably with all the cards we have to carry around these days. Mine was a 'bargain' Prada one from Bicester Village a few months ago - I couldn't believe my luck when I saw they had one in red.

As my nails are so weak since having acrylics removed a nail file is a must about my person. I picked up Leighton Denny's Chrystal Nail File a few months ago and am in love with it.

Never one to resist a bit of animal print and a user of Denman hairbrushes this handy sized brush is perfect for handbags. Along with a hairband which is often used to tie my hair up on particularly hot and sweaty days as I'm about to board a train.

I've always carried a pen in my bag although find they're almost left unused due to making notes on my iPhone. Despite this it's always handy to have at least one and I have too, appropriately a Victoria Line one and another from a recent trip to Kensington Palace.

More animal print in the form of my Oyster card holder a recent purchase from Oasis. I'm particularly fussy about Oyster card holders as I need something with at least one clear side that my staff pass occupies and I have to carry around my office at all times and they're harder to find than you think!

Keeping work and home life separate is a Blackberry for the office and I personally use an iPhone. Is it a pain, sometimes although I find I tend to always have at least one phone with sufficient battery life to make a call!

And finally are my Raybans which have been a necessity during the Summer to avoid squinting and cause extra wrinkles. I have the gold aviators which I picked up in Florida on my holidays last year. They're so wearable and go with everything!

Of course there are a few other things missing, my iPhone as mentioned, usually I'll have thrown in a cereal bar and a packet of crisps for snack times and the obvious missing thing is my make up bag but on a Sunday evening my brushes are drying out and I tend to have a last minute scrabble in the morning deciding what make up to use for that day/week. Let me know if you'd like to see some posts on what I have inside that.

So there you have it, my first what's in my handbag post - I think that's a bloggers stripe awarded don't you!

August Empties

Lot's of full size products in this month's empties post as well as my usual stash of travel sizes. As you can see it was time once again for me to touch up my grey hairs (welcome old age!) with L'Oreals Castine Creme Gloss in Dark Chocolate. I'm toying with the idea of changing up my hair at the moment which may draw to a close of home dying and calling in the professional but I'm just deciding whether to take the leap.

Liz Earle Eyebright Soothing Lotion is a favourite of mine which I mentioned in my recent #theSOproject Skincare post you can read here. I favour this to give my eyes a wake up call and remove any gunk in the mornings or for particularly bad hayfever days.

I sent for a sample of Skinetica Anti-Blemish Treatment by applying here as for £1 it was worth a try. I tend to only get a spot here and then during 'that time of the month' and would apply this to the effected areas. I always wonder about these sort of products because you can't really whether it's nature or the product working. Would I buy again, I think not as my skincare regime should be sufficient to deal with hormonal breakouts.

VO5 Plump Me Up Dry Shampoo* is a staple for me when I need to give my hair a bit of life if popping out after work or at weekends when I'm doing little more than popping to the supermarket.

Clarins One Step Facial Cleanser was a purchase last year when I was attempting to improve looking after my skin (and failing based on the fact I've only just finished it this year) and trying to find something to buy in Duty Free (something I won't have a problem with when I'm next travelling). This is my lazy cleanser. It sits on my bedside with some cotton wool pads so if I've climbed into bed without removing my make up I can reach across when too comfy to head to the bathroom. Whilst it smells great and does it job at removing the make up it's rather oily to use so I wouldn't repurchase as there are so many other choices out there.

I don't know why I persevered with Nivea Sensitive and Pure Deodorant as it actually made me sweat more when I would use it. I would definitely not repurchase this, especially now as you'll see below I think I've finally found a deodorant that works.

We all know I'm a big fan of Chanel but a fan of their Bi-phase Eye Make Up Remover I am not. My eyes stung all night after using this. Again I persevered but it was too much and I decided it was time to abandon it.

Elemis Shampoo and Conditioner didn't cut it for my hair and I was left with greasy roots, definitely not a repurchase and neither would TRESemme Colour Protection Shampoo be. This was better than Elemis' offering but results weren't remarkable.

Despite Nivea's other offering not battling the sweat this Nivea mini was sufficient to pop in my bag for the much needed touch ups although I'm all about Sure Maximum Protection* these days. This shampoo comes into it's own when applied at night and again in the morning. I'm planning a full review on this shortly with some tips and tricks to follow so stay turned.

GLAMGLOW Mud Mask which I reviewed in this post didn't last long as expected. I managed to eek out 3 masks from this. I'm holding off whether I'll repurchase once I've seen the results from my Orgins Charcoal mask.

Finally a product that I've seen popping up in a number of blog posts recently is Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentrate. I really liked this but sadly it contains mineral oil which no one should be putting on their faces so I don't intend to repurchase.

Super Gorgeous September // Photo-a-Day Challenge

I made a last minute decision 10 minutes ago to join in Super Gorgeous' Photo-a-Day challenge over at Instagram - find me here. Slightly worrying I made this choice knowing that today's photo is of your hair and I have literally got out of a bath and tied it up on top of my head following an oil treatment and wearing no make up but that's all part of the fun!

Let me know if you're joining in with the challenge and your instagram user names.
